You know the type: style guides, grammar texts, reference books, or whatever else you find useful to aid in your writing.

There's seems to be a variety of these books. Which are the most commonly used?

Goodness.
Right, well, the majority of my writing is academic, which means my bible is the Irish Historical Studies style book. I don't reccomend having anything to do with it unless you're writing in Irish history academia. Unless you like being terminally confused.

Otherwise, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography online is fantastic, as is the OED.
My father swears by Fowlers's English Grammar thingy (don't know the title).

You are a Leprechaun. I'm not even sure what you are. Whiskey-soaked reports from your baffling Isle of Ire raise more questions than they answer. Are you a dwarf? Where's your pickax? If you're an elf, why don't you cobble? You'd think with all your gold, you could invest in some land, perhaps a title, and improve your station. Instead, you hide it in meteorologically-determined locations. You're getting killed on inflation, little friend!

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but these have been helpful books to me. "From Reading, Writing" by Winkler and McCuen and "Writing Down the Bones" by Goldberg

And for a good reference book for Poetry, "Writing Poems" by Wallace.

Jeremy, what'd you think of Writing Down the Bones? That's one of the books I actually had in my hand over the weekend (but put down, as I said in my earlier post). It looked intriguing but wasn't sure.

I adore "Writing Down the Bones". It's one of those books that you can just open to any page and find something to inspire you.

'On Writing' by Stephen King helped a lot in my writing. Other than that, I just read any good book I could put my hands on.

I really liked On Writing. I pulled it out a few weeks ago, but just haven't had the time/desire to dive into it again.

On Writing is great! Ray Bradbury's Zen and the Art of Writing is pretty inspiring, too.

I'm ashamed to admit that I use wikipedia a lot when I'm writing. It's handy, and if I want to put a detail about 16th century fencing or the Roman Aqueducts, it will at least give me a place to start looking, if not a comprehencive account.

I like Edgar Allen Poe's "Philosophy of Composition" and his "Poetic Principle". Learn from the masters I say.
