Just finished Tales of Natural & Unnatural Catastrophes by Patricia Highsmith.
It was good, but rather dark, so I'm balancing it out with some Tom Holt. *** "objective evidence & certitude are doubtless very fine ideals to play with, but where on this moonlit & dream-visited planet are they found?" William James |

brain k vaughn's recent comic of the escapist was well worth reading. there are a couple of collections of shorts, but this one was a solid graphic novel length piece. i got the novel after the comic, still not gotten round to actually reading it though. i also got "the final solution" by him, which i got impression which same kind of idea/follow up, though not read it yet either... |

Just started Spook Country. I forgot how well the Gibson can describe things without seeming pretentious. It's the best thing I've heard in months.

Does it make you want to believe?
In all seriousness, what's it like? Is it creepy because their stories are believable in some way, or because they believe so much but are clearly deranged? |

The creepy thing is these folks' stories are alike in so many ways, and they didn't communicate with each other before hand. Some folks draw things they see and other people draw almost the exact same thing. And they all receive similar messages from the aliens. I don't know if some of these people are delusional or what, but most of their case histories before the events show them to be regular, successful, non-excentric types. And these events cause a radical change in their world outlook and how they want to live their lives. And the thing is, the doctor could find no childhood or early life events that could have manifested in the abduction experience. Its all so confusing. I wouldn't say that it has challenged my belief system, but its very interesting to ponder. I don't know what to make of it! |

Carl Sagan proposed that alien abductions and NDEs are so consistent because they're memories of birth: tunnel, light, blank-faced Grays, etc. ETA: Recently got Colin Wilson's The Mind Parasites, and one of Moorcock's Corum books, I forget which one. And going through my shelves for major culling. This message has been edited. Last edited by: ZoneSeek, |

The Carhullan Army by Sarah Hall. (Apparently sold in the US under the title "Daughters of the North", though I can't see why.)
I only read it because a friend had pressed her copy on me, but I thought it was excellent. It's set in a dystopian future, with a women's community on the fells living as outsiders to escape authority. What makes it different from the rather 'hello trees, hello sky' novels of this type that were written in the 1980's is that this is much more believable, brutal and satisfying. I'd never heard of it before, but it's won awards. *********************** There once was a bard of Hong Kong Who thought limericks were too long. - Gerard Benson. |

have you read 'the gate to women's country' that had an interesting (if not very believable) look at women's and men's roles in a future community.

i really like sherri s tepper, until i get sick of her, she has common themes running through her books which one or two are empowering? but then get sickening.
she is very very pro woman and anti 'men religions' ~ I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not. trolls are like pigeons..keep feeding them and they keep coming back and shitting in your street. |

I LOVED that book. The only other thing of her's that I read was Beauty (her take on fairy tales) but I really really enjoyed it too. I can see how she might get to be too much after a while. ------------------------------ "I claim the capacity to doubt." - Herman Wouk ------------------------------- "They warn you about killers and thieves in night I worry about cancer and living right But my mama never warned me about my own Destructive appetite" - Jenny Lewis "Happy" |

Well, I have now finished Tess of the D'Urbervilles, & I liked it. I still found it a rather slow read compared to other books, though, & depressing enough for me to want to read more cheerful things in the next month or so... It's weird, though. Whenever I heard people talk about the book, it seemed to be the discussion always got back to the same point - was she raped or not? (white for people who don't want to know anything about the plot) - & somehow to me it seems rather secondary, since it doesn't seem to matter.

Try this pump; here's a stilletto; my, did you see the calves on that pony? Size 6? Oh, madame, really! Still, there are so many hooves, and so little time, and you often miss out on the fun (and the better meme results.) __________________________ "Truth! Justice! Freedom! ...
