How does one get into that field? I currently sell books, which is almost as good- but to actually get paid to read them?? Sounds like heaven.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith

A meditative, gentle read; produced many smiles and a couple of out-loud chuckles. Although it's billed as a mystery, the mystery elements take a back seat to the evocation of modern Africa (specifically Botswana).

Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett

This was one of my first Pratchetts. Originally I borrowed it from a friend about 18 months ago to have something to read on a train journey. I just bought it myself because I wanted to complete my at-home collection. Upon re-reading, I liked it much better than I did the first time through. What's interesting to me is how Pratchett have grown and evolved as a writer.

You are an Illuminator. You add color and beauty to anything you can get your hands on: books, tavern signs, clocks, small barnyard animals. While your work goes largely unappreciated, at least it pays the bills. Why, that enormous golden M you painted for the new Scottish restaurant down the street netted you a farthing!

I actually found a hardcover of Strata by Terry Pratchett. dustjacket isn't fab and there's some ink scribbles on the bottom edge, but it's pretty cool to come across a hardback in a used bookstore.

Strata isn't one of his better efforts, but I'm trying to get everything in hardback.

I don't foresee another book purchase until Anansi Boys comes out.

Maeve -

I try to get a hardback replacement when I wear out a paperback. I'm currently considering replacing Courtship Rite by Donald Kingsbury and Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner.

I don't have a lot of time to browse used bookstores anymore, so I tend to use http://www.abebooks.com .

I bought Ursula K. LeGuin's "Changing Planes" to read on the trip to Otakon. I've read the first parts of it, and it's realy cute.
I plan on purchasing Hideyuki Kikuchi's "Vampire Hunter D: The Raiser of Gales" and Brian Clevenger's "Nuklear Power" while in Baltimore. Smile
