OK. So this kid is sent by his mother through this magic door, and there's this other land, where there's this woman who is death, this guy that ends up being Jesus, and the Devil is this guy made entirely out of rocks called "Stonecutter." Any ideas at all? I remember the author was a woman, but that's it.

Oh, and Jesus and Death play chess with a human chess board.

Alright, I'm going out on a limb here - there's no specific mention of Jesus or the Devil, but otherwise, this sounds an awful lot like your book:

"Seaward is the story of Cally and Westerly.

Westerly is followed by unknown pursuers ... Witnessing the murder of his mother and haunted by the disappearance of his father he escapes into this strange land ... On his journey he is drawn into the world of the Lady Taranis and a deadly game of chess, played out by real armies ...

Cally ... passes through the mirror and into the land of Seaward. Immediately she meets Taranis' people and Stonecutter who seeks to prevent Cally from travelling ...

Finally Cally and Westerly reach the sea and there they find Taranis and Lugan, Life and Death ...

And the author is indeed a woman, Susan Cooper.

I never could make myself read this one for some reason.

Is that indeed the book?

You are a Confectioner. Who can take a sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Actually, that's Bob The Enchanter, two doors down on the left. But you make delectable treats, which is no simple feat considering Oompa Loompas won't be invented for three centuries. Not only do you delight with your sweets, but you've paved the way for a new profession: dentistry!

This board is fricking amazing at finding things based on random bits of information. I'm always completely impressed.

marvinmarymac- Australian author could be Isobelle Carmody? Though she isn't quite as much a kids author.
I know Marc Mcbride has illustrated a lot of kids books for Australian authors though, if that helps. He's rather good, too.
