Just finished Going Postal, it was ok, but i will admit it i now have a Susan, Death, Death of rats fixation, which was not satisfied in this book. Still very good book in comparison to other authors etc..

I think we own all the discworld novels. (All in paperback of course). I love Vimes, Veternari and Susan. They also get more funny the more I learn, funny that. Nightwatch is way up there with Theif of Time, they just have such great characters!

Indeed, I think it's those characters who set Discworld apart and make it special. For me, Vetinari and Susan are totally cool to read, but the main guy I always look forward to reading is Vimes, and whenever he pops up, Lu Tze.

Hmnn, I wonder exactly what it says about me that my heroes are a half crazed lawman and a gleefully insane and choatic monk . . .

Oh, and I'll be picking up Going Postal as soonas it's in paperback.

I loved Susan in Hogfather, and look forward to reading more about her.

I agree that Vimes is very cool. I can really identify with someone who manages to do The Right Thing in his government job despite bureaucracy and the temptation to slack off and be mediocre at best.

I like the multi-layered-ness of the humor in these books. Did anyone notice that HEX seems to be running the classic "ELIZA" program ( see http://www.manifestation.com/neurotoys/eliza.php3) at one point in Hogfather? The many little cultural references are beginning to make me think that Pratchett is the Lewis Carroll of our time: you can enjoy both authors without getting the little intellectual in-jokes, but it's even more fun when you notice them.

But you make delectable treats, which is no simple feat considering Oompa Loompas won't be invented for three centuries. Not only do you delight with your sweets, but you've paved the way for a new profession: dentistry!

Read Going Postal and flat-out loved it. Moist was a little overdone as a character in parts, but the book had its story and knew how it wanted to tell it and did so with great vigor.

Psst. Read Thief of Time!

And I totally agree with you, when you pick up on the little extra bits and pieces he throws into the mix, it's just plain brilliant.

Checked out a Terry Pratchett site, L-Space I think...anyway; two more novels about Tiffany Aching in the works as well as a Nightwatch novel called "Thud" which may include more about the Battle of Koom valley...sweet!

Terry Pratchett was kind enough to take part in an online discussion group through one of the online book sellers this past month.

Science of Discworld 3 should be out this spring.

Thud should be out this fall. It takes place in Ankh-Morpork and involves the watch.

After that he said he is working on a book called Nation. He said that he started wondering how many people does it take to make a nation, so he came up with the idea of a nation made of just one individual. Should be interesting.

And there should be another Tiffany book somewhere in there, too.

He also said he was thinking about a young readers book about the adventures of a young boy who enrolls in Unseen University, but I'm not sure if he was just making a jest about Harry Potter.

Another Watch book? I like them, but how much more powerful can Vimes get? Maybe this one will take them down a bit, allow other AM characters a shot...

Cho Girl recently picked up 8 Discworld books with some of her Bat Mitzvah money, including The Color of Magic.

What a lame book that is (IMO, of course!) ... I'm so glad I'd already read some of his more recent books first. You'd hardly think it was the same writer.

On the other hand, she also got the first few "witches" books, which were fun, and Jingo, which I've almost finished and am enjoying a lot.

I may not have started at the beginning of Discworld, but thank goodness for the turtle on the cover of Small Gods attracting me to that book. I love Small Gods. Terry Pratchett has recently been filling a hole in my reading that was left when Douglas Adams left us.

I liked his first few books, but I definately think that he hit his stride with "Equal Rites." I discovered Pratchett and Gaiman at the same time, when my S.O. gave me a copy of "Good Omens" for X-mas.

Just finished Equal Rites, which is a very quick read. Too quick, in many ways - the ending just sort of rushes together. And I'm getting the feeling that we never will see Eskarina again, although she ought to be a big deal - the only female wizard, after all - in later books. But of course, that would take a lot of fun out of the ridiculous "men's club" atmosphere of the UU.

I was also immediately struck by similarities to the much more recent Wee Free Men. I think maybe the more recent book is where he finally decided that the whole basic idea of the magically talented little girl from the sticks ought to go.

I really didn't like "Eric." It seemed mostly like a plot device to show that Rincewind wasn't dead.

it's not the best - but did you read the illastrated one? that was the original - I'm not sure how it would have worked in just text.

I just read The Last Hero. The illustrations made me laugh my ass off. Especially since Cohen and Rincewind looked exactly like I'd always pictured them. I was kind of dissapointed that the luggage only got a brief mention though.
