Started reading Science of Discworld after finding a copy on ebay.

I love it.

The scientific bits are well written and easy to understand without that feeling of being talked down to.

The story about the wizards is wonderfully funny.

1) Welcome to the boards, please make yourself at home, mooche about, especially over to the worlds end, that's where most of the social stuff happens.

2) don't give up on Good Omens, read it anyway, it's not really like either terrry's writing or neils, it's a nice amalgimation of both.

3) don't give up on terry either, try some of his earlier stuff like small gods, you may find that more to your taste.

Isn't it great? Science II is almost as good (minus the "wow" factor of seeing the stuff for the first time).
I gave them to a friend of mine who has his Phd. in Physics....yes, he IS a Rocket Wizard. Wink He thought that for an overview of the science, and the entertainment value of the wizard story they were very well done. He enjoyed them muchly.

Actually, I wasn't much of a fan of Colour of Magic. Just didn't really do anything for me...

Everything else though was right on the ball!!!

sort of almost about Terry Pratchett, indirectly...

Stephen Briggs has some truly excellent stuff at his website: http://www.cmotdibbler.com/cmot.html

I have the flight badge from The Last Hero and a Death motto pendant, although I use it as a keychain, and the Harga's House of Ribs apron.

they were Christmas presents to myself a few years back.

Big Grin

take it from me, they're gonna get better before they get worse again.

and by worse I don't mean bad, just not as good as his best.

and hats off to you, colour of magic and the light fantastic are much heavier reads than his later books, so go you for reading them in one night Eek

I've just re-picked up once more with footnotes and am reading a couple of bits out of that.

are we playing favourites?
lords and ladies and nightwatch. hands down, no questions. although i do want to re-read small gods....which i suspected is packed away Frown

A book a day really isn't that difficult for me. Hell, I read Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" in one sitting...

Finished Equal Rites, am now working on Small Gods. I've really enjoyed them all so far. If they only get better, I can't wait Smile

see, you're soooo lucky, you have so much reading yet to do - we have to wait 6 months before each or our next fixes Big Grin

I have a bunch more reading to do - my first round with a book is usually a very quick read. I'll then go back and read it at a much more leasurely pace. That way I get to experience it twice Smile

Been having some trouble getting through Small Gods though. Been playing golf pretty much every day, and I'm just too wiped out when I get home to do much reading. Think I'll just go home after work today and finish it off...

Confused

Heavier than Night Watch, or Monstrous Regiment?

I don't really care for Small Gods, either. It's clever, but it doesn't engage my emotions at all.

Isn't it a good thing that there is a Pratchett for practically every taste? Big Grin

You are a Confectioner. Who can take a sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Actually, that's Bob The Enchanter, two doors down on the left. But you make delectable treats, which is no simple feat considering Oompa Loompas won't be invented for three centuries. Not only do you delight with your sweets, but you've paved the way for a new profession: dentistry!

definatly.

small gods wasn't my favourite (i prefer nightwatch and lords and ladies) but i've heard more than one person comment it was theirs.

now i'd say that Night Watch was a....serious book, but not heavy going i flew through it, all 3 or 4 times. I had to struggle a bit though the first two, it's the literary style I found is heavier going rather than the content matter. But then, I was only 15 when i read the first two, so maybe that also had something to do with it.

and monsterous regiment, yeah, that was quiet heavy going - because that was becasue i didn't engage with any of the characters so didn't much care.

which ones do you loves chomiji?

Well, on the "De gustibus non disputandum est" front ... Monstrous Regiment! It's one of my favorites.

I also love Hogfather, and The Wee Free Men. Thief of Time and Feet of Clay are pretty good too.

favourite for me would have to be Thief of Time

i also had a hard time with his earlier works they just don't have the polish and flow of his later stuff, they sort of come across as him trying to be as out there and whacky as say adams, but the characters just aren't as likeable and it's hard to get drawn into the story.

I love the way he manages to mix so many concepts with his rich sarcastic satire spread throughout.

And i gotta say Thud had me in histerics, in my opinion his books are only getting better as he ages.

Thud! was really good. Has anybody read The Carpet People (OK, but not the best) and the Bromeliad Trilogy (much better)?

yuppers St Count Zero, I've read em all! Even Strata, which gets better the more times you read it, as does The Dark Side of the Sun. I prefer the Bromeliad Trilogy over The Johnny Maxwell trilogy, although that's fun, too.

I just finished re-reading Thief of Time, it's just soooo much fun!

Johnny Maxwell trilogy is a fairly easy/fast read, the last book is really the most fun, in my opinion.
