Hey--I found an item on the earliest pages of this thread that--having peeked in again at various points--did not seem to get addressed. It was about Vetinari's aunt, the champagne, and an inside joke.
I always read that story as meaning that the aunt and Vetinari were teetotaling vampires--not publicly and annoyingly sober, but longtime abstainers. Explains a lot about Vetinari--his dangerousness, long life, etc. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Taoist “Wooo-weeee!†The bosom that can be tamed is not a real bosom. I think that was me jazzcat. I know she's a "retired seamstres" hem hem, but not sure if I buy vampire. Vetinari does age, he's about as old as Vimes.

Okay: in Truth, he's in the jail cell & no one can wake him up. Only Igor (from Uberwald) seems unconcerned. It is also remarked that he never sleeps.
At the end of that book, he is reading minds (also in many other books). He likes his office freezing cold.More later. In Carpe Jugulum, the jokes having to do with wine turned wine snobbery on its head: all the trappings of the proper temperature, etc. ("room temperature" used to mean about 50 degrees, because the red wine was brought up from the chilly French castle cellar & had to sit until it "warmed up"; in the 70's, chic folks thought that meant it should be served at, say, California summer room temps, and actually chilling it was simply NOT DONE). Then there's also the turnabout of the vampire kids trying to fit in with their "subversive" peers, by changing their names to Wendy & Tim, becoming accountants (not counts!) & cutting their hair--natural Goths going preppy! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Taoist “Wooo-weeee!†The bosom that can be tamed is not a real bosom. s'been a while since I read The Truth, but I don't remember anyone being concerned that they couldn't wake him up. He'd been hit on the head.
He was also affected by the poisoned candles in erm... Men at Arms - I think that's the proper book. (although I will grant that he could have been faking, he was either faking or purposely making himself sick so that Vimes would figure it all out) I don't believe he reads minds, he's just a very good student of, well, I was going to say human nature, but the Discworld isn't limited to humans, so I'll say sentient-being nature. He has gotten wounds before. He got shot by the "gonne" and was certainly bleeding. Would a vampire keep bleeding? He does know Lady Margolotta, that's pretty certain. He just seems much more like Granny Weatherwax than a vampire. I love the scene at the end of Wee Free Men where Granny appraises (glares at) Tiffany and says "You got good boots." Freakin' awesome. A compliment like that from Granny Weatherwax would just about kill me.

I aspire to be Nanny Ogg some day! But frankly I relate most of all to Agnes. And Magrat, too, before she became queen.

I didn't look to see if anyone's mentioned it already, but has anyone read the Science of Discworld books? I'm wondering if it would be interesting or totally confuse me.

This one I found quite interesting. It's basically the wizards watching a miniature universe unfold in their courtyard. This universe obeys our natural laws, though, and there's a lot of incredulous banter about how gravity is impossible and so on - very nifty.
The second one spends to much time on the framing story, in my humble view, but nevertheless is quite entertaining. It's also almost ridiculous off the mark on some of the science, just to warn you. The third is the most obtuse of all, but worth reading if only for the meanderings on the nature of time and space and, of course, for the quantum. __________ AJGraeme "You see, I have a policy about honesty and ass-kicking: if you ask for it, I have to let you have it." -Taylor Mali "Science is the foot that kicks magic square in the nuts." -Scratch Fury |

what he said.
I re-read the first one - all of it, the other two are read more for the wizard bits. If you can find Once More With Footnotes, that's amusing, too. If only for the short story - Hollywood Chickens. (this book is not Discworld related, it contains various short stories and essays and musings and ponderings.) k, I'm just worried that it's going to baffle me. but it's not too supersmart, right? I mean, I'd like to go into some of the science of Discworld, but I don't want every detail explained to me.
I have to say though, once I've finally finished all my unread books and I'm allowed to buy new non-Discworld stuff, I can see myself becoming a Pratchett completist. so I may be asking for more suggestions soon -Captain Silky, Queen of the Heartless Bitches YAHR! (by popular demand) |

Oh, well, it's not really about the science of the Discworld, at least no moreso than the regular wizard's books are. It's much about how the science of the Discworld is different from ours, and about our universe.

So I guess you liked it? It made you smile, anyway!
I liked it pretty well - better than A Hat Made of Sky but not as much as The Wee Free Men.
