ah yes, Rincewind is adorable, isn't he? He's just so unrepentant about being a coward. He was very much a caricature in the first two books and he was such a counterpoint for Twoflower's blissful unawareness of how the real world operates. But I think he came into his own in Sourcery. And Interesting Times and The Last Continent are always fun to re-read.

I love the last continent. Eric is fantastic too tho, i really need to re-read that. i'm working my way through them all again at the moment actually - i've started to lend them to a friend and in deciding which ones to lend him i've re-remembered how much i enjoy them!

ETA: Smaug has told me how to post spoiler text, so the bits that annoyed me in making money (and they really are tiny things):

the way mrs cake's powers are referred to as premonition, not precognition. and the way that dibbler's initials are made to stand for names, not his nickname.

spoiler-ish guesses:

CMOT was trying to get a bank loan, so he may have thought he needed an actual, proper name? and I would bet that premonition is merely a typo, possibly changed by some twit at the publishing house who's never read Discworld.

I remember that waaaaay back a character said that the upcoming century was going to be Anchovy or some such and now it's Rat (or is that the other way 'round?) I also remember thinking it odd that Soul Cake Thursday got changed to Tuesday.

But... well... How often does he re-read his books? For him it's a once off, for us it's something we've re-read so many times we can quote it.

yeah, i know, but the dibbler thing really pissed me off for some reason. i mean, it's not just a throwaway line, is it? we're talking about a character with some serious history, all based around the name.

i haven't read the new one. i think the newest discworld thing i've read is Wintersmith, actually, which i *really* enjoyed.

maybe when there's a twofer on at the bookshop on pratchetts, i should buy the ones i haven't read yet.

I'm rereading Witches Abroad because ... well, I wanted Terry Pratchett to read and that's what The Boyâ„¢ got for me at the library.

I really want to read Eric. I got that for my brother (that's his name,) when he moved to Hawaii many moons ago. I was hoping he'd lend it to me, but I don't know if he even has it anymore.

Rincewind is a failed Wizzard in his twenties/thirties.
In the adaptation of The Colour of Magic (I think it also adapts the Light Fantastic as well) pensioner David Jason (last seen as Albert in Hogfather (it'll be interesting if they ever make Mort and they meet each other)) is playing Rincewind.
It's good that David Jason is using his clout to get these adaptaions greenlit, but he doesn't always have to play a principal as characters drift in and out of different books.
Sean (Sam Gamgee) Aston is also playing Twoflower.

I vaguely remember him playing Albert in Hogfather and frankly I hope he does a much better job as Rincewind, but he just seems ill-cast. As does Sean Astin. Sorry if it;s racist, but Twoflower always seemed oriental in my imagination.


oh and since fion was having fits with it, I decided to re-read Reaper Man, just for the Mrs Cake bits. And unless they changed the books for the omnibus editions (and I have the UK edition) he did use "premonition" several times so far - I'm about halfway through, Windle just got done with meeting Reg Shoe.

However, Mrs Cake does seem like a caricature throw-away type character in Making Money - put in there just for giggles and not really getting any. She also seems to have lost her funky accent, which is what helped to define her. And Ludmilla seemed so interesting in Reaper Man, but now she just seems like a pathetic spinster.

But Rincewind is the Discworld's worst wizard. For him, the correct assesment really is that his best move is to run away and hide. He's Wile E. Coyote, but worse, he avoids excitement yet it follows him wherever he goes.

ahah, i will go and re-read mine. i'm sure you're right - i probably latched onto precognition because it's a more interesting word. and you're right about the accent, it's a shame that that's gone.
personally, i want another witches book. i know he's been carrying them on in the tiffany aching books, but i'd like another one set in lancre. i want to see what's happened to magrat, and agnes, and whether there really is a new three (surely not)

I continued to read after I wrote that and the word precognition magically appeared!

I'd rather like some more witch books, too, but I'm not sure what he could possibly write, except for the obvious about Granny. I read somewhere (and I dunno if I can find the link, so don't take it as absolute truth) that the next book be was planning was not going to be a Discworld book.
