There is a huge different with having qualms with the military, but it's a whole other thing to compare those who serve in it to prostitutes and declare they are the scum of thea earth.

Monkey jokes about librarians are still worse. So it's not like I feel bad or anything.

The point was that Vimes doesn't like the military as embodied in the Ankh Morpork nobles. He's a policeman, and a civilian, which is about as different as you can get to Rust's crowd. Its the character's feeling, not necesarily the authors. And its a pisstake of the British colonial era, and the Italian city states, and the World Cup, and just about every international activity ever invented...

Its a bit daft to be starting a row about. Really.

mtxx, i love the Amazing Maurice book. you can read it on so many different levels. tell me what you think when you've finished.
marymac, i've never seen the word "row" used in context of a fight before reading terry pratchett. but i really like how you used it. and the word "daft". that's a fun one.

Anyone else read Zelazny's "Lord of Light" and think that the Librian is a tribute to Tak of the Archives? Both archivist/librian peeps... both got monkey bodies... both decided to stay in them 'cause of their usefullness.
I just finished "Sourcery." Funny book. I like the Rincewind books... haven't read many of the others, actually. Its getting near Hogswatch, though, so maybe I should reread "Hogfather"...

I don't mind having people express opinions about the military, and I respect them. However, when people start bashing the military (a very common practice) and insulting them I get a little bit upset. You are right though, there is no point starting something stupid over it.

Take it to the Flame Wars boys.....

Dayvd; please tell me you realise row as in fight is said differently to row as in boats. I've got this image of you wandering round saying people had a row ('ro') over something instead of row (r-ow). And 'daft' is one of the best words in the language. Very useful and expressive of such a range of silliness.

It was a very good book. One of his best. I liked all the stuff about how intelligence will eventually lead to stuff like ethical and religious musings and in the end attampts at a well ordered society. THe arrogant 'piper' at the end was really funny. And all the rats were sweet. And the obligatory Death cameo was nice.

Very good book. I REALLY like his childrens books, although I cannot quite figure out exactly what the differences between his childrens books and grown up books are. confused
