I had read all his books except for Eric, which I finally got recently and I was rather disappointed. There was some funny stuff in there- like the bureaucrat Hell, but I don't think it can be put up there with, say, Reaper Man and Men At Arms and Small Gods...

You didn't like "Eric"? I got that book for my brother for his birthday (even though he'd never read Pratchett before) because I thought he needed to have a book with his name as the title. I'm disappointed at the thought that it might not have been very good.

I don't know, some people seem to really like it, I just don't. At least not as much as the rest.

Did you get the large illustrated edition of Eric? I've never read the unillustrated one but it was origianally illustrated so perhaps the other version does miss something.

And now I've added to this thread I'd really recomend Night Watch - I'm trying desperatly to wait until it come out in paperback to buy it (I borrowed the HB from the library) but I think I'm going to fail. Very good read. big grin

I bought the illustrated version at a sale. THe illustrations kinda made it worth the reduced price, but I've never felt like re-reading the story.

Pratchett readers have voted for their favorite books on this page: http://tphon.marlis.org/vote.php?name=Book

As you can see, "Eric" is the one that got the least votes of all PRatchett's books.

although I never got the illustrated version, I am somehow not surprised. It's not that Eric is a bad or boring book, but he wrote much better things.

Um. Row as in rowing a boat is said differently to row as in fight. At least, it is here. You kind of put a stress on the ow sound rather than the flat way you say it for rowing as in boats....

I dunno. Anyway, since you're in the States probably no one would notice. It was just a odd image...

I guess I'm alone on this one, but I used to be a pretty big Pratchett fan. I've read a bunch of the Discworld series and I own quite a few of the books.
It just seems that the more I read his stories, the less I enjoyed them. They all seem too contrived. Now I understand that any work of fiction is obviously going to be a contrived work, but the way things worked out just seemed too ridiculously coincidental too many times for me to really enjoy his books anymore.
Maybe I should give him another chance, but honestly, I doubt I will.

Oh and just for the record Soul Music was my favorite of the ones I read.

i was just thinking of that last night. i get into certain authors and read everything they've ever written. Terry Pratchett is kind of hard to do. i mean, i absolutely love his books. but you're right about things coincidentally working out all the time. i'm reading Jingo right now. but had to put the book down and search for one of my favourite books, Blue Belle by Andrew Vachss. one of the few that makes me cry every time i read it.

Jingo's a good one. As for series, I think I like the ones about the Watch the best, although Rincewind did definately have his moments.
