It's my lazy Saturday morning, so I laid in bed and finished reading The Truth.
Another lovely installment in the Discworld series. It had been a while since I read one, therefore this was a refreshing return. I don't think I could make-up a single negative thing to say about one of his books if I tried. _________________________________________________ But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.' `How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice. `You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.' A maze without beginning or ending, a locked box without a key |

i just read Moving Pictures recently... damn funny, as usual. i'm so amazed that pratchett can parody/satirize so many different things, aside from just the plain fantasy genre. and you gotta love a writer who refers to cabbage as 'brassica'.

Question for those who have read Monstrous Regiment (Spoilers):
I'm listening to the book on tape, I'm around half way through. Please explain the vampire situation to me - although a Vampire is with the group the entire time, they have yet to mention anything about him needing to hide from the light. OK, much of the story is marching at night, but I haven't noticed Pratchett addressing what he does during the day... Is this part of the Discworld mythos I'm not familiar with or an oversight or something else....? |

I'm busy reading Monstrous Regiment too. I don't think it mentions it in this book, I may need to re-read Carpe Jugulum for more info.
Or The Truth may mention it as it does intoduce the vampire taking photo's for De-Worde's paper, and he turns to dust with the camera flash. In this instance the light doesn't kill but he needs to re-morph. If I find out about the daylight I'll let you know. BTW - In my opinion Monstrous Regiment is not turning out as good as NightWatch. I found NightWatch one of the best, but this one is just one of the okay ones. Some of my favourites so far are: Lords and Ladies Nightwatch Feet of Clay Guards Guards. Interesting Times What are other people's favourites? ~~~ I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not. |

Finished the book on Saturday. Opinion is the same - decent, but not outstanding. I enjoyed Thief of Time better (the most recent Pratchett besides this one that I've read). He never seemed to address that one issue I mentioned before, so I'm till puzzeled about that. One or two of the resolutions I was a bit disappointed by.

I haven't re-read the book, but this book review of Carpe Jugulum by Mark L Olson may be an explination:

Heh. The Watch novels definitely rock best. All of them.
Nightwatch is no exception. Great book. The abyss has become our horizon. |

Didn't enjoy Jingo as much as some of the others, apart from that The Watch rule!
Has anyone read the Pratchett graphic novels? The colour of magic & the light fantastic were fine, Mort was okay, but Guards Guards really worked (in my opinion). ~~~ I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not. |

I just passed a copy of Good Omens on to the teenage daughter of a friend of mine -- she had to read a novel by a British writer. Haven't heard what she thinks of it yet, hope I havent thrown a grenade into her adolescence!

As I just pointed to this thread from another thread, I thought I'd list my favorites, in no particular order:
Mort, Reaper Man, Guards! Guards! (hell, the entire Guards series), Thief of Time, Small Gods, Maskerade, Lords and Ladies, Hogfather ---------------------------------------------------------- "It really is fun to to stick burning objects into various orifices." "Sorry I haven't been around much, but I am easily distracted by shiny objects." "WEIRD! WEIRDY-WEIRDO-WEIRD! WEIRDOPOTTAMUS WEIRDOSAUR! HIM! YOU! WEIRD!"-Mr. Furious |
