Okay, kids! To coincide with the movie's release, what say we do a DiR series bookclub? I think it's going to work out to something like 3 weeks per book. I'll figure out the dates while you go rummaging around for your old childhood copy, or while you run off to the library.
Anyone in? _____________________________________________________________ Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket. - Goonies |

That's cool. Or if you just want to share your favorite passage, or if you looked up something relating to the story and want to share that too, that's also cool.
I know when I first read it as a kid, there was SO MUCH arthurian/welsh mythology that went right over my head. Every time I've read it since, I always run off and look up a little more. _____________________________________________________________ Don't you realize? OH this sounds like fun... FUN!
(minor) problem: all my books haave been in boxes for the last two years, and i have little idea where everything is. i'm moving (hopefully) July 1st to a place with room for my bookshelves. until then i won't have access to the books. when are we starting? also, i know i won't need three weeks to read one of those books.. when i re-picked them up a few years ago, i sat and read through a book a day. they're wee. i'll catch up no problem. good idea, Amy. duh... but yes, the University Curriculum Laboratory has four copies of Dark is Rising. i'm sure the public libraries have copies as well, but i owe them all kinds of late fees. should suck it up and go pay them, but have to wait until all the monies come in for summer studies. *wonders what new eurekas will come with this reading* ____________________________ Have pity for the minimalists... I'd love to join, if I can find the books. I'd never even heard of the series until ya'll started blogging about it.
I should find them and read the first this week, yes? ******************************** The only really sane person in there is Igor, and possibly the turnip. And I'm not so sure about the turnip. ~~ Terry Pratchett |

I have to admit I've never even heard of the book, or author. I'm tempted but don't know whether I'll have enough time to read all the books as I'm also a very slow reader. What kind of style is it - could you compare it to any other books or authors so I get an idea?

Gia - during this first week, concentrate on getting a copy of the first one. We'll all start reading next week.
Cassiopeia : It's a juvenile series written in the 70s. As amazon describes it, it's high fantasy with lots of arthurian legend in it. It's about a boy, who on his 11th birthday finds out he's the last of the Old Ones - a mystical and mythological people who are Good whose duty it is to battle Evil and save the world. Think of Wrinkle In Time minus the science. It was my FAVORITE series as a kid. _____________________________________________________________ Don't you realize? I'll totally take part in this, having read the books more than a dozen times.
But I'm going to ignore the movie. I'm sorry, but I've never seen a movie of a book I love live up to what I see in my head when I read it. Oh, and there's an "all 5 books in one" edition that might be cheaper than buying them seperately. |

I've never been in a WE bookclub, but if it's like other bookclubs, I'd imagine it works as follows: you decide on a book & by when you'll have read it (Amy has already organised that), everybody reads the book, & then you get together & discuss it, ask questions about things that weren't clear or ambiguous, & so on.

Yup. We just talk about stuff. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm excited about this one because I know there's still some stuff in there that will be read differently as an adult than as a kid.
It's just like any thread about a particular subject, only we'll all be reading the book at the same time and questions and observations will be fresh in our heads. _____________________________________________________________ Don't you realize?
