Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders has some scene sin a icrcus (and one of the girls actually listens to Cave's the Carny).

David Lynch HAS to have something carnival-circus-related.

Yeah -- one of the Twin Peaks White Lodge (?) scenes is a carnival stage -- the one with the Really Tall Man. I remember this. I don't remember which episode. I think it might have been Coop while maybe in the Great Northern's (?) restaraunt. I"m not sure.

There's "The Jar," and and the one about the dwarf and the house of mirrors, titled "The Dwarf," I think.

Stardust, feh. Mommy Fortuna's Midnight Carnival from The Last Unicorn. Creatures of night, brought to light.

Edit: And there was that X-Files ep with Dr Blockhead and the Conundrum.

There's a scary horror-laden scene set in a fair/carnival near the end of Diana Wynne Jones' young adult fantasy Fire and Hemlock.

You are a Confectioner. Who can take a sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Actually, that's Bob The Enchanter, two doors down on the left. But you make delectable treats, which is no simple feat considering Oompa Loompas won't be invented for three centuries. Not only do you delight with your sweets, but you've paved the way for a new profession: dentistry!

Re: The Last Unicorn. When I watched that as a kid, that scene didn't feel so much creepy as depressing, if memory serves.

Re: Tom Waits. Yeah, but it's mostly weirdo characters, nothing really all that scary.
