Has anyone here read it? I enjoyed it to an extent, as it does a couple of clever things with the idea of fairy-tale characters living as exiles in (more or less) present-day America. However, I felt that there wasn't quite enough there to make it special; the plot and characters remained rather flat and never went beyond being clever only. Can anyone tell me what the other volumes are like?

What I do love, though, are the painted covers. They're really lovely. (The art of the story itself looks rather pedestrian.)

Same as you and Clover, Thirith. I was rather disappointed, there was some potential that was a bit wasted there.

i got the first 51 issues as my most favourite monthly comic.
(i got bored of trailing for comics and missed issue 49) i've stopped bothering buying any, but if i did i'd still get fables. ~ I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not. trolls are like pigeons..keep feeding them and they keep coming back and shitting in your street. |

We've got all the graphic novels, and I find them a consistently amusing read. I think the first GN was my least favorite, for whatever that's worth.
---------------------------------------------------------- "It really is fun to to stick burning objects into various orifices." "Sorry I haven't been around much, but I am easily distracted by shiny objects." "WEIRD! WEIRDY-WEIRDO-WEIRD! WEIRDOPOTTAMUS WEIRDOSAUR! HIM! YOU! WEIRD!"-Mr. Furious |

Chris brought the first three with him the first time we met. They do get better after the first graphic novel - that was a lot of set-up. They aren't Gaiman, by any means, but the characterization does improve over time, especially for reoccurring characters.
I'm a big fan of fairytales and reimaginings of fairytales, so I was predisposed to like it. However, if you didn't grow up reading children's literature in English, it might lose a lot of it's charm. |

I think the problem might be that charm isn't quite enough to keep me interested. I've now read Animal Farm, the second volume, and while there's a lot there that I kinda liked, there's little that grabbed me. At the same time, I don't like starting a series and not finishing. What do you think - should I give vol. 3 a chance?

I´ve read only (so far) the first album, but liked it and will be reading the others too.
At the same time (well almost) I read the first Lucifer album and didn´t enjoy it at all.... but will probably give no. 2 a chance anyway, so Thirith... (as Eddie & the Hot Rods would say) Do Anything You Wanna Do! "Happy, happy happy all the time Schock treatment I´m doing fine" |

a fables thread, especially for mythos as he's busy reading it, but for everyone else who's read it or is interested too.
who's your favourite character so far mythos...i must admit mine is just a small part character, but i did get a thrill when mowgli turned up, and he was cool ~ I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not. trolls are like pigeons..keep feeding them and they keep coming back and shitting in your street. |

The first GN was a fun mystery story, but it definately got better in my opinion after that. They dug into the characters more. For a long time my favorte was Mean Seasons, but now I am not sure
One of the only comics I try to keep up with every month |

My favourite character Smaug would have to be Frau Totenkinder (or the Black Forest Witch). She is as much of that Fable as you can get. And I loved her story in 1001 Nights of Snowfall. It gave me thrills.

I've just finished volume 5 (is that Mean Seasons?) I don't think I have a favorite character. Though I do agree with Mythos, Frau Totenkinder is pretty cool.

Well, I have decided that I have three favourite trade paperbacks to this series.
One of them is Fables: Homelands, then Fables: Wolves and finally and most recently Fables: The Good Prince. Lots of awesomeness in this series, I have to say. ______________________________ Do not leave me with a bowl of anything for an extended period of time. |

Just finished Wolves. It was good. I don't know that I enjoyed it as much as some of the others, but I think I need to reread it.
Maybe I can squeeze in a trip to the comic book store during Arts Fest and pick up the next one .... ******************************** The only really sane person in there is Igor, and possibly the turnip. And I'm not so sure about the turnip. ~~ Terry Pratchett |
