Another recommendation is Daredevil:Born Again by Frank Miller.

What an incredible story. It's probably the one I re-read the most.

If one is not so familiar with Daredevil I'd go with Man Without Fear, likewise by Miller, as it provides a comprehensive origin.

Who was it who recommended Y: The Last Man to me some time ago here? Books 2-5 were just delivered to me today. I'm suddenly SO much poorer. Razz

Other than that, I don't have much to add... I haven't read almost any comics for years now. I grew up with X-men and some other Marvel stuff, and ten years ago I was dating a guy whose only good quality, in retrospect, was his best friend's comic art collection, which included Sandman. Oh, I remember liking Enki Bilal, too - I even bought the first couple of albums of the Hatzfeld tetralogy on my own, long after the relationship was happily buried. But over the years I've suppressed all further comic interests. This thread tempts me...

Good point Snazz. Though it's really not that necessary to really enjoy Born Again. Miller does the backtracking for you through the characters' narratives(Ben Urich's and Matt Murdock's), where Man Without Fear is a slow build up. Born Again really makes you want to read about 20-30 issues before it, to find out how Matt Murdock eroded to the point Miller puts him in.

I agree though. Basically, you should read both. It's some of Miller's best stuff in any comics.

That was me, I think. Hope you like it! Smile

I like Enki Bilal's visuals, but like so many of the European comic crowd, I think their stuff often doesn't work as storytelling. They're so in love with the aesthetics that the story itself is a lot of hot air.

Thirith, just finished book 5 last night. Thanks for the tip. They really are fun to read, like you promised.

I think I'll justify buying the remaining books as a Christmas present for myself. (And Christmas will come early this year. Big Grin )

I'm starting to warm up to Warren Ellis. The Amazing Spider-Lan lent me the Planetary series and I liked it.

I had a Barnes and Noble gift card and picked up

Iron Man: Extremis by Ellis and it's pretty good.

Yeah, Ellis has a few different modes: superhero mode, sci-fi mode and mad political rant mode. Which is why if someone doesn't like Transmet so much I can usually find something by him that they would like. Part of the cool thing about Extremis is that it's very much in sci-fi mode, despite being an Iron Man comic.

I haven't read Extremis - I'll try to remember it.

I was fond of Mark Millar's first two Ultimates (Volume 1 Books 1 & 2) trades. I'm not sure how I feel about Volume 2 Books 1 & 2, though.

In addition to having a solid sci-fi story, Extremis also takes a good look at the reasons for Iron Man, as well as bringing in the tried and true timeline revision technique of changing wars when a character gets too old (shifting his origin up to the first gulf war).

Ellis also makes reference to Ruby Ridge in Extremis. That is all I'll say.

Boy did I recieve a shock today. A friend of mine knows I like My Chemical Romance (scoff all you want, I like them and I'm not ashamed of it) and he gave me the entirety of the Umbrella Academy series this morning, including the issue from Free Comic Book Day. Well, actually he gave it to my sister when she went down to the comic store to pick something up. She told me it was a 'get well soon' present from him. Anyway, it's written by Gerard Way (lead singer of MCR) and at first I just kind of laughed. Sure, he writes interesting lyrics and came up with some weird but intriguing stuff for the Black Parade. But him as a COMIC writer? He was a failing comic artist/animator before he was in MCR and I figured there was probably a reason for it.

Well, I spent the afternoon reading them, and I was riveted by the end. I haven't been this sucked into a comic since I first picked up Sandman two years ago. So I happily open mouth, insert foot after freely admitting I was wrong. I highly recommend it. I'm also thrilled to find out that there will be another Umbrella Academy mini series coming out later this year. Yay!

I'm fairly new to comics, but two of my favourite writers are Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. Morrison's Doom Patrol is brimming with an almost insane genius. The characters and stories are so original and imaginative.

I'd also like to mention Alan Moore's Promethea. Not just a good story, but also the most beautiful-looking comic I've read yet.

Dealing with comics and writing. In my opinion good writing will hold through weak art but good art will not hold bad writing. I have kept with series that have changed artists but kept the same good writer even when the art was dismal, example Whisper Steven Grant's story was great but man did he get some bad artists during his run. On the other side when Claremont left scripting X-Men even though Portacio was doing the artwork (and it was beautiful) the stories was getting weak and I had to leave it be. Like to hear your opinions on this.

Between my work and studies, I'm finding a little time to squeak in some comic reading. While cleaning, I recently found a Jack Kirby Mister Miracle collection I was going to loan Lan when he was here. I've started re-reading it and I'm really enjoying it.

I've really been curious about Kirby's Fourth World. I know I like Mister Miracle, but has anybody here read Kirby's Fourth World, New Gods, etc? Like it, love it, hate it, meh?
