I just finished Clive Barker's "Abarat". I suppose its meant for younger readers, but I found it totally engrossing, and recommend it highly to all Neil fans.

Has anyone else found themselves immersed in the Sea of Izabella and the Islands of the Hours?

When the hell is the next one coming out??

“Indeed m’lud. She’s marshalled all the haggle-dans. Missy-twigs and vale-nymphs from Claypole Woods. Apparently she intends to tear this house down and dance on the ruins.”

I was really caught by the story, when I was reading it I couldn't put the book aside! I'm waiting patiently for the #2!
(also would love to see it on comic form!)

not read much Barker. i thought Weaveworld was terrific, but The great and secret Show left me cold, and i've never picked up another book by him.

god, but i'm fickle.

Eek
i loved the way that Clive Barker paints such VIVID worlds with his books. The way he puts in poems and songs make the book seem more real. My favorite was the hampster tree song.
"Oh woe is me
Oh woe is me
I used to h ave a hampster tree
But it was eaten by a newt
so now i have no cuddly fruit
Oh woe is me
Oh woe is me
I used to have a hampster tree."
(sung to the tune of O Tannenbaum)

Heh. Imajica left *me* hot-n-bothered.

Not only is Abarat totally engrossing, featuring a very human heroin (she is the daughter of an alcholic), but its also a GORGEOUS book to simply hold in your hands--- Barker illuminated every page in color.

I mean, just LOOK at this:

It is gorgeous.

One thing that I noticed when I first picked up the book was how *heavy* it felt for its size.

I'm definitely interested in checking out the next book.

Oui, hard back.

And Molly, the heaviness of the book was what made me decide to buy it.

I was so impressed with the heaviness that I kept making freinds pick it up. "Hold this book." I would demand. "Heavy, innit?" And they would look at me as though I were a crazy garbage-digging lady who wears all her clothes at once and nod slowly to placate me.

I love that book! I bought it because I was so intruiged by all the illustrations and i was not disappointed.

I've not read any of his other books, but know him by reputation, so I was quite surprised.

I always liked Barker's illustrations, ever since I first saw them on the UK collected "Books of Blood" editions, and the drawings in Abarat looked lovely. But it got too many so-so reviews for me to actually read it. Fantasy novels tend to really bore me these days.

I liked it too. The great thing about childrens books(not that this was one) is that the author doesn´t have rationalize his/her imagination.

I really liked Weaveworld as well, but somehow I just never picked up another book of his...nothing against him, it was just a series of coincidences, I guess...

The back cover was a turnoff. Terrific! Fantastic! Magnelephant! But I got to like it after a few pages.

I got to the Mischief character and kept seeing a polar bear. Make it stop...
