Hey, all. Don't know if any of you out there write plays but if you do, and particularly if you have one written, I have an opportunity for you. I'm on the Board of Directors for HotCity Theatre Company here in St. Louis. Our GreenHouse arm is putting on the First Annual New Play Festival and is looking for edgy, tight, super plays that are unpublished and haven't seen full production. We're doing four plays, have two chosen already, and are looking for two more. If you think you have something you want to submit, PM me and I'll get you the contact info.

I'm interested, but what remains of mine that is unproduced tends to involve gratuitous nudity and violence towards objects inanimate and animate. Are there local bylaws that your theatre has to abide by regarding profanity, blasphemy, obscenity and impropriety? I often fail at that hurdle.

Well, let's see, we're not called HotCity Theatre for nothing, I meant what I said when I said "edgy", and our season opened with a GreenHouse production that had full nudity of both sexes, simulated oral sex, implication of bondage, urination and humiliation, an eventual suicide, and plenty of profanity - all that and it worked for a very interesting if heavy piece of art. So, if it all works for the piece, isn't gratuitous for the sake of it (it can be pervasive but needs to have purpose), then there isn't a problem with it. Not for our company anyway.

So sodimising a papal corpse is acceptable? Excellent.

I'll have a look through what I have and see if there's anything I can let go of. Cheers.

If you haven't already, click the link. There's a link on that page about the festival. And if you get serious about sending something in, I'll pass along the necessary contact info (Jason is the guy you'd work with).

My sister in law is working on another play in between raising her 2 year old and newborn. So I have no ideal where she finds the time. I know she has people she has worked before in NY. I could mention it to her if you want. Just a thought.

It's an open invitation! I heard we were still looking for two more plays at last night's Board meeting. I immediately thought of the WE. So anyone and everyone is welcome to inquire. I won't be giving personal recommendations, just making the connection.

That's awesome, JP. I don't write plays, but I think its a great idea. The theatre I work at does a playwriting competition every year. Actually, one of the shows I'm doing right now is this year's competition winner (Ghosts of Ocean House.) I've done a number of original pieces at this theatre. Its so much fun to be the first one to do a particular show.

What I'm writing now is likely to be destined to them, and I'm English. I see no reason why they should only accept Usanian submissions. Go for it if you want to. Means they might get to call it an International Festival.

(Naturally JP would be best suited to answer, and if their borders are closed, you could always pretend to be American.)

NO! Not at all. In fact the piece I described above, Skin and Flames, our season opener this season, was by a Spaniard. We were even priviledged enough to have him for the first two nights for Q&A after the show! So no, international is more than welcome, but I will say it should probably already be translated (I know Skin was), but then again, I suppose that's Jason's call.

Well, Jason is putting the festival program together as we speak. Our Board meeting last week he mentioned he was still looking for two plays. I'd say the sooner the better. I'm not sure about a hard deadline, as he wasn't really asking us to beat the bushes and get subs, I just thought of you lot when he gave his update. For all I know he could have found his two, but I doubt it, and besides, it's an annual thing, so always room for subs if you ask me.

I must add (since no one else has seen fit to mention this), that it's spelled "playwrights." The fact that someone so closely aligned with the dramatic arts wouldn't know this sorta casts some doubt on the endeavour, in my mind...

Love the Bucky avatar!

Well, the endeavor is legit, it's my spelling that sucks. Ask anyone here who knows me, especially those I IM with. S'why I keep a dictionery on my desk, I just didn't bother to check it.

So yes, thank you for pointing out to everyone else who hadn't noticed (or didn't bother to care) that I do suck at spelling, and that sometimes I just don't care.

You Satchel Wink (oooooh, burn!)

(don't mind me, I'm in a weird mood right now)

So now it's only open to Neener affiliated playwrights?

Thank you for the revision; I feel much better now.

I am a grammar nazi by vocation, but a langwidge anarchist by avocation, which makes for a hellish, conflicted inner world when I particpate on these boards... Though I generally try to avoid correcting anyone, in this case, I thought you might want to offer folks the highest level of credibility in order to solicit their work.

No offense meant--it's what I'd want someone to tell me (as opposed to the entire semester that once went by when no one pointed out that I'd misspelled our textbook name on my syllabus).

I took it with only minimal offense Smile And really, 'round these parts, I just figure I have enough street cred that something like that wouldn't keep people from sending me something if they truly wanted. However, seeing as Cav and Lan are the only two I truly know of those who've replied to my thread, and the rest of you probably don't know me from a hole in the ground, it's a valid point. Hell, maybe the misspelling is exactly the thing that kept other people away in the first place! Smile

*laughing*

Really, no offense taken. It's one of those words that I just never ever pay any attention to and would have NEVER noticed if it hadn't been pointed out to me. It's all good.
