okay...so 4 books. offical votes here? I'll count the votes and book chosen say, wednesday (wednesday evening my time Smile)?

If you've already voted for books in the below list, I'll count it as 'a vote', unless you say otherwise (you have the right to change your mind).

books (menitioned by more than one person):

  • good omens (co-written with neil)
  • hogfather (as a stand alone book about christmas (should we leave that one until christmas?)
  • guards! guards! (the first watch book)
  • nightwatch (recent book about the watch)

I'd be happy with any of them, but I'll cast my vote for Guards! Guards!

It is a good introductory book to Discworld for those new to Pratchett, and helps refresh the memory a bit in anticipation of Thud.

It's still a toss up between Guards! Guards! and good omens for me.

Edit: I think that for anyone who's new to the watch story-arc reading the books in which Vimes is still an alcoholic first is rather important.

Guards Guards has my vote too.

and smaug, hogfather is part of the susan series, which is sort of a subset of the Death books. At least thats the way i always look at it. I *heart* susan.

I had voted for nightwatch but I'm changing it for Guards! Guards!
It makes sense to start there.

sorry, newbie here. Terry Pratchett is one of my favorite fantasy writers now. If we're voting on which of his discworld or other books to start reading/bookclubbing, i vote for Good Omens. I haven't read that in years. Also i just recently, in the last few years, went through a whole slew of ;almost the whole series from The color of magic to Going Postal; discworld novels and illustrated book (The Last Hero) and loved them. Only the first discworld book i read, Small Gods, i didn't really like then for whatever reason and i've only read it the once (sorry, Inagreyplace). I don't know if i have a favorite character or book from Discworld, but having read Going Postal twice and A Hatful of Sky after it came out, i liked both those books greatly and Moist von Lipwig and Tiffany Aching the best. Oh, And I almost forgot Cohen the Barbarian. Don't care for Rincewind as much and am glad he hasn't been in the last few books i've read. N.B. ididn't read them in order and i missed a few .

Oh, sorry if i'm rambling on for too long in the wrong thread. and i''l head for the pratchett thread after this post.

Thanks,
Hin.

you are very welcome to join us, why don't you pop over to worlds end where you will receive a traditional worlds end welcome (don't worry, it doesn't heart and tends to include balloons, and for some reason at the moment, flying animals Eek

and everyone else, come on, voting finishes about this time tomorrow!

Smaug, are you going to vote, or do you have no preferences out of the above list?

hehe, I'll have the casting vote if it's a tie.

I love all pratchett books (well, not so mad on dark side of the sun or the other one pre-discworld) so I'll have fun anyway.

Ooh I haven't read Pratchett in 2 years. I've read most of 'em though.

However, I SUCK at bookclubs. I prefer to read at my own pace and my own thing, so I'll keep out of the voting, but I would say I love the witches ones, Lords and Ladies I found really gripping.

"The other night I dreamed that King George VI was dead, and that Helen Hardinge had somehow or other got herself proclaimed Queen of England, and that I was detailed to go and tell her that it wouldn't do at all; and when I did this, all she said was, 'You see, I am really Queen Mary,' and I said, 'Oh very well' - words to that effect, and woke up.

Last night I dreamed that Eisenhower came to stay with us, and he insisted on being put to sleep in the dog kennel, with a collar and chain about his neck."
