It comes out in February.

NOT a biography.

Instead, a book with Tori describing how her creative process works. 240 PAGES

quote:
From her critically acclaimed 1992 debut Little Earthquakes to the recent smash Scarlet's Walk, Tori Amos has been a formidable force in contemporary music, with one of the most dedicated fan bases around. In Tori Amos: Piece by Piece, the singer herself takes readers beyond the mere facts, explaining the specifics of her creative process—how her songs go from ideas and melodies to recordings and passionately performed concert pieces. Written with acclaimed music journalist Ann Powers, Tori Amos: Piece by Piece is a firsthand account of the most intricate and intimate details of Amos's life as both a private individual and a very public performing musician. In passionate and informative prose, Amos explains how her songs come to her and how she records and then performs them for audiences everywhere, all the while connecting with listeners all over the world and maintaining her own family life (which includes raising a young daughter). But it is also about how Amos uses her music as a medium to express her unique and fascinating personal history; in short, we see the pieces that make up—as Amos puts it—"the woman we call Tori."

With photos taken especially for this book by the acclaimed photographer Loren Haynes, Tori Amos: Piece by Piece is a rare treat for both fans and non-fans alike, an inside look at what it's really like being one of the figureheads of contemporary female music.

I GOT MINE!!!! I GOT MINE!!!!!

Was up all night reading listening to Tori with my iPod. Lovely. I'm not going to give anything away, I'll only say fans won't be disappointed. It's really very beautiful, and very interesting, humorous in parts. Can't wait for others to get it so I can discuss it with all of you.

She describes her creative process for 240 pages? wow... thats... self-centered. or verbose. or something. i'm not critisizing her--my man Nick Cave has written some pretentious stuff in his time-- but it seems a bit... excessive. Like that new Wilco movie thats supposed to be so funny.

(OTOH, i bought Bob Dylan's self-indulgent, critically hated movie sight unseen, so i shouldn't talk... it just seems a bit too much)

not just creative process, but biography too :

quote:
Written with acclaimed music journalist Ann Powers, Tori Amos: Piece by Piece is a firsthand account of the most intricate and intimate details of Amos’s life as both a private individual and a very public performing musician. In passionate and informative prose, Amos explains how her songs come to her and how she records and then performs them for audiences everywhere, all the while connecting with listeners across the world and maintaining her own family life (which includes raising a young daughter). But it is also much more, a verbal collage made by two strong female voices – and the voices of those closest to Amos—that calls upon genealogy, myth, and folklore to express Amos’s unique and fascinating personal history. In short, we see the pieces that make up – as Amos herself puts it—“the woman we call Tori.”

actually... this seems so obsessivly devoted its almost scary. but that isn't really a bad thing. i can think of a ton of people i'd love to see 240 pages about:
Tom Waits
Steve Jobs
Bob Dylan
Alan Moore (hasn't he already got it?)
Shigeru Miyamoto (Nintendo guy)

it could be a series! in-depth portraits of really creative people, sure to be bought by the faithful. i'd pay.

(i think Jeff Tweedy from Wilco did do something like this... supposed to be really pretentious. or possibly it was Thom Yorke)

wow... that sounds really cool. do you have any more info?
i dunno why, but the idea of seeing where he works and where he gets his ideas and stuff is just appealing. i'm guessing happiness is involved. and kids. i know he designed Zelda to evoke exploring caves around his house when he was a kid

well, i haven't read the book per se yet, only the introduction. i'm told that the original concept is an extensive review on the videogame phenomenon, and the first character videogames are associated to, super mario. from there it inevitably turns also around shigeru, his past, his sources of inspiration and stuff like that.

it's funny that you mentioned the cave exploring episode, that's exactky the annecdote my ex used in his introduction.

EDITED: i just found a site in english that mentions all the books by that editor (i can assure you that many of those are true crap, but babish is a friend). the book i'm talking about is "Super Mario Worlds. Actions, Interactions & Explorations" by Andrea Babich.

i love how Miyamoto actually succedes in that goal-- the best part of Zelda for me is just poking around, and i wish i had a place where i could do that... look under rocks for jewels and magic
i dunno if you're interested, but www.insertcredit.com has great analysis of games from a literary/personal/structural perspective. like... talking about the existential dread of Katamari Demarcy. and the writing is really good.
