I just picked up The Hobbit and Silmarillion and already own LOTR Trilogy but haven't read it yet. I have seen the movies.
So, where do I start?

the hobbit (how bilbo got the ring)
then the lord of the rings (how frodo got rid of the ring)
then the silmarillion (you're a braver person than me!)

enjoy Big Grin

I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not.

trolls are like pigeons..keep feeding them and they keep coming back and shitting in your street.

Thanks Smaug, appreciate it. Don't know when I'll get at them but at least I know the order.

I almost wish I was reading it for the first time! I really hope you enjoy them.

In my opinion, this is one of the few occasions where I'm not in despair that someone has seen the movie(s) first.

I know this isn't a popular opinion and I am speaking in general (not about LOTR) but sometimes I'd sooner see the movie first - then I wouldn't be as disappointed with the book.

I cannot possibly resist pointing out that The Silmarillion happened before The Hobbit in the story's chronological order Razz

But Smaug's order is about right. Though The Hobbit is much lighter and isn't really a lead-in to LotR, so you could read it after, and The Silmarillion is definitely optional.

The Silmarillion can be a tough one to read through. Not that it's exactly boring, but it's very intense. It's like a history lesson where the writer decided to make note of what song the birds were singing and how many blades of grass the hero was standing on.

Read The Silmarillion as though it is a written mythology. Because it is. Smile

I would so have got good marks at history if it had been taught that way...

Indeed. And I actually prefer it to the Hobbit, and to a good deal (let's be honest, a lot of the Frodo/Sam plotline) of LotR.
