I hope I'm not alone when I say... I love love LOVE fall. Or Autumn, whichever you prefer. It makes me think of all things filled with delicious-brisk-dark-cool-crunchy-orange- pumpkin tendrilly-pagan-foresty-mushroomy-magical- late -night-candle lit-roaring-fire-at-the- hearth goodness. Or something like that.

As a result, I want all the books I read during this time to reflect, entail, embody all the wonderfully soul-satisfying things of fall. Especially if it's a fantasty book, what with all the fantastical things that occur this time of year, everything seems to just... what's the word?.. B]drip[/B]... magic.

So you lot seem to be an informed bunch. Does anyone have any book (or movie while we're at it, why no) recommendations that are especially autumnal in tone, feeling, topic, setting, vibe, et cetera? If so please do let me know. I would prefer fantasy this time around, as I said before, but am open to other genres as always. Even if they're things by Neil, do not assume I've read them all (yet)...

Don't want to waste another day of the season! HURRY! Smile

Thanks everyone!

PS - Why is orange not a color option for text?

Knee-jerk reaction: Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Most probably a re-read for you; I know I've plowed through mine at least a dozen times. It's always been a cold weather, hot drink, warm incandescent light kind of book for me, though. There's something about a story of long marches and sleeping rough and long white knives, read in the comfort of an armchair in a safe, heated room...

I usually make Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes an annual autumn read.

That's a good one for this time of year - love it!

FaeryBlood - I also love this time of year. I'll be back later to post more. Unfortunately, currently, this time of year has me very busy.

If you haven't read Into the Wild, now would be a good time with the movie coming out.

Anything by Alice Hoffman puts me in an Autumn mood.

Also, and not just because the movie is coming out today, Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series. There's that deep, ancient tone to it that brings the solemnity of autumn to mind.

For me, The Lord of the Rings was sth I read around this time of the year, but I guess you've read that. Then, some of the Death books by Pratchett feel a bit like that, although I couldn't really tell you why - they're just fun to read during long evenings.

Another book that came to my mind is not fantasy: Jane Austen's Persuasion, the tone of which has been called "autumnal" by critics.

Still, there are so many hooves, and so little time, and you often miss out on the fun (and the better meme results.)

Ooh yeah! Definitely Wuthering Heights! And I'd throw in Jane Eyre into the bargain.

Personally, I remember being HIGHLY disappointed by "Wuthering Heights" when forced to read it in high school. From a geeky literary standpoint it is cool how the story is perfectly symmetrical between the two generations it covers, but...

That being said, on the whole I found it to be a stuffy bore. I was sorely disappointed. There were some good descriptions but mostly it was dull stuff. There was literally one page that was actually romantic. Not even the whole page at that.

Good idea for a book, but the execution left me wondering why I just wasted all my time reading it.

But then again, that's just me. I'd be interested to hear what someone who enjoyed it thought and why. Different people like different things.

Well, I loved it for the odd ghost story that it was with the two star-crossed lovers and all that. Heathcliff and Catherine were wonderful fleshed-out characters who couldn't live with each other, and couldn't live without each other. I love that sort of stuff. And the moors. I loved the book for the moors. It's not often that the scenery makes a book.

Can't let any scary book requests go by without mentioning House of Leaves.

The Boy, you rock. Very well played, sir, very well played indeed.

For whatever reason, I've been out of school these last eight years but I always find myself reading adolescent coming-of-age books in fall. Something about the unpeaceful change from summer to winter, I guess.

A Separate Peace, Catcher in the Rye, Rats Saw God, even Lord of the Flies, they all speak to me very strongly of fall. Oh, and a newish book, Maybe a Miracle. Quite good, and funnier than I expected.
