"I came into aviation the hard way."
-Nevil Shute, Round The Bend "Aft of the bridge of the destroyer Virtue, Ordinary Seaman Ludd wiped his nose on the back of a gloved hand." -Ronald Bassett, The Tinfish Run I hadn't remembered either of those lines even vaguely; had to look them up to write them here. What I had remembered was the immediate sense of context and scene-setting I'd experienced upon first reading of the first pages of those novels. And one I do remember: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." Grabbers. |

i loved this book. "Are you a princess? I said & she said I'm much more than a princess, but you don't have a name for it yet here on earth." -Brian Andreas Limertilly: A pagan deity forgotten by man and therefore banished to the realms of memory and darkness now remembered by a young girl in downtown L.A. in the form of a dream and therefore freed to reap your revenge on the people who discarded you, thereby forcing said girl to learn to use her innate yet awesome powers as a soothsayer to gather forces of the Earth to defy you and once more banish you to your cold, cold prisoooooon |
