There is currently a consultation out from the Home Office in the UK which, if it gets approved, could make possessing Alan Moore's Lost Girlsillegal. (see www.homeoffice.gov.uk/documents/cons-2007-depiction-sex-abuse) Just wondered if anyone had any strong opinions on this or knew if Alan Moore might be considering sending in a response to the consultation.

I'm just glad I don't live in the UK as I already have the book and wouldn't give it up. |

I have page not found too. This is an issue for me and my partner, we are both big fans of Moore's work, but the release date for Lost Girls was pushed back because of copy right issues with Great Ormond Street. It seems that the current release date will be after this law comes into force, which may mean that there will be no UK publication of Lost Girls at all. I'm hoping to order it from the US for my partner's birthday, though I'm not sure how it will fare in customs...

thing is, these pieces of legislation can't draw in black and white what the actual things are, so although in principle it might include Lost Girls, chances are, just like other 'erotica', it will be let by because of the context.
it just won't fly in legal terms. By necessity, the legislation has to have a certain vagueness, to prevent proper kiddy fiddling funsters from getting their kicks from straight up porn drawings of paedophilia... though there is an interesting debate to be had about that, too, come to think of it. Hmm, I'm not sure I agree with that. It's when the law is vague that things which shouldn't be covered by a law can get caught up with it, because it can often end up at the discression of the authorities or of just one judge. In other words, they decide what things meet the vaguely dfined parameters, on the basis of what they personally find offensive. And reading that overview does bring to mind some of the wilder things which were being said on message boards about 'Lost Girls' when it was published. Supposing it *did* ever come to court say, given that there's already been some controversy with Great Ormond Street complaining, I wouldn't fancy it's chances. Laws have been used in the past to ban things just becuse particular individuals in our authorities took exception to them (for example, all the troubles Savoy Books have had over the years). Legislation should be clear, otherwise it will inevitably be open to abuse.
Which is not to say that in principle such a law might not be a good idea. Waspfearer: As for UK customs, I honestly never thought about that when I bought my copy from a US seller on amazon marketplace (shortly before amazon took down the listing for the book too)! I had no problems with it reaching me, so hopefully that would still be the case for you. |
