Superhero BATMAN will turn his attention to real-life bad guy OSAMA BIN LADEN in an upcoming comic book. The Caped Crusader will take on the might of the al-Qaeda terrorist network in new graphic novel HOLY TERROR, BATMAN! Batman writer FRANK MILLER tells the New York Post, "It is, not to put too fine a point on it, a piece of propaganda. Batman kicks al-Qaeda's a**." 14/02/2006 13:53 http://contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/bat...n%20laden_14_02_2006 |

please, someone check out scoops and tell me its not real! ~ I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not. when's spring due?. |

I think Miller could pull this off. Especially if a large portion of the story involves the actual hunt and detective work to find bin Laden. In Batman, I actually enjoyed the hunt better than the battle.
I believe in the comics, Batman was referred to as the greatest detective the world has ever known. ----------------------------- Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. Additional handling charges may be required. |

Miller's written some interesting Bat-stuff in the past, though I heard All-Star Batman and Robin sucked. I wonder if he could pull it off.
Oh, and Grant Morrison doing another Batman story? Sounds GOOD! ____________________________________________________________________ "Patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. i think miller's past his prime and should stick to sin city, because everything he's writing now just feels like sin city pretending to be whatever comic he's doing anyway.

The only terrorist Batman should face is Ra's.

well, he's already had one story where he's actually fighting terrorists in the middle east.
maybe we'll get lucky, and they'll kill Jason Todd in this one, too! ****************************************** Me in Rock: This Shirt Is Pants | Mr. Fusion Me in blog: izenmania |

I'm not sure how I feel about this, even if it is Frank Miller. Propoganda is, well, not a good thing, even if the targets of it are mass murderers. The whole thing strikes me as a step backwards in comics.

I'm starting to swing your way, Phoenix. The more I think about this...I don't like it. Does anyone really need to be reminded that Osama Bin Laden's a bad guy? Do we really need to see him bitch-slapped by Batman.
I've seen pictures of Captain America knocking Hitler's teeth out, but this seems different. And to some degree, it seems like a step backward for Miller's Batman. Doesn't Batman laying the smack down on terror make him something of the Superman boyscout he despised in Dark Night Returns? ____________________________________________________________________ "Patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. captain america was created to fight terror; batman was created to spread it.

Well put. Maybe that's what's been nagging at me. I love Cap and I love Batman, but they are completely different.

They are, but is this really radically different from Bats taking on any of the other small cells of dedicated, radical criminals he's fought in the past? Sure, their motives were generally greed, or a love of question marks, but I don't see Al Qaeda as being radically different from the guys Batman took on in Death in the Family.

Maybe not. Granted, it's been a long time since I read a Death in the Family. I do remember that it didn't feel like propaganda (but I'm keeping in mind that was done long before 9/11). Still, my previous statement stands. If this is all-out propaganda, then I feel like Miller is making Batman into a clone of the Superman boyscout Bruce Wayne so despised in Dark Night Returns. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

I'm not really comfortable putting Al Qaeda in the same catagory as, say, the Royal Flush gang. Also, the title irks, me. I don't think we need to be reminded that terrorists are bad people by having racial stereotypes batteranged.

How is "Holy Terror" a racial stereotype?

When Superman fought the Japanese in the 40's, they were portrayed in a racist manner. I might be going out on a limb, but seeing as the AUTHOR describes the peice as propoganda and is PROUD OF IT, I don't have high hopes of Arabic or South Asian characters in the comic.
Also, the title is, I don't know, too cutesy for the professed subject matter. Maybe just the fact that it is such an attrocious pun sets my teeth on edge for the whole concept. See, the title's kind of grown on me. I've always been fascinated by the way terrorists (or anyone who uses violence to achieve their ends, including Dubya) claim what they do as holy. It kind of stands in the face of everything I believe in.

It's three paragraphs and a quote from a man who once replied to a question about religious imagery in Dark Knight Returns with the short phrase, "Fuck God." At a high school.
Really, it's Frank Miller, we can't know what to think yet based on this. __________ AJGraeme "You see, I have a policy about honesty and ass-kicking: if you ask for it, I have to let you have it." -Taylor Mali "I am a sexy, shoeless god of war." -Belkar |
