Blerg, thanks just i don't know how to describe how wrong that is....
Comics and literature are supposed to ridicule and parody real life. Not go along with someone like Bush. The only way Frank could possibly redeem this in my eyes would be if batman finds out that Bin Laddin is dead already or that he was a puppet of Ra's.... Sorry but the whole concept just screams icky propaganda. |

What "concept" are we talking about here? We have a title and a short sentence from a creator known for speaking cryptically. Unless there's another URL that I'm missing here, we have skint as far as actual information on what this thing's going to be about.
Honestly, if you heard Watchmen summed up as, "a group of retired superheroes agrees to let one of their number take over the world," would you have read it? __________ AJGraeme "You see, I have a policy about honesty and ass-kicking: if you ask for it, I have to let you have it." -Taylor Mali "I am a sexy, shoeless god of war." -Belkar |

Well....yeah, actually. **** “Chives?†“Yes, m’lud?†“Is that Ms Ephemera hovering over the croquet lawn?†“Indeed m’lud. She’s marshalled all the haggle-dans. Missy-twigs and vale-nymphs from Claypole Woods. Apparently she intends to tear this house down and dance on the ruins.†“Well, Chives, you’d better start the car, what? And pack my tennis things too†--- Joe 3Heads |

Leaving aside the literary value of such a thing, wouldn't this be putting Frank Miller on the spot for terrorist attacks? I mean, see what riots a couple of cartoon have caused, wouldn't this make the actual Bin Laden who actually *is* a really bad guy go after this author for mocking him? I'd prefer it if FM didn't put a big target sign on his forehead.

I doubt Bin Laden is a follower of the US comics scene. Besides, comedians and writers have been jabbing at Bin Laden ever since 9/11, and so far the writing staff of, say, Conan O'Brien have not been accosted by suicide bombers and the like.
Other than the usual joke that bombs, that is. I think the uproar isn't so much that Miller is treading on dangerous territory, but that Batman's universe doesn't seem to be a good match for a face-off with the radical Muslim movement. Comics are most successful when they have storylines that *parallel* the issues of the real world, not when they directly address them. When a guy wearing tights and a black body suit suddenly leaps out of that world of anaolgy and into the world of the literal, suddenly everything that Batman symbolizes seems a bit...ridiculous. And here's an article talking about precisely this: The Thin Line Between Stupid and Clever (and yes, I noticed that it is dated "March 23rd, 2006"..either it is a piece of our near future..oooo! Or it's a typo) **** “Chives?†“Yes, m’lud?†“Is that Ms Ephemera hovering over the croquet lawn?†“Indeed m’lud.

Oh, and the attacks and threats on the cartoonists are over a physical depiction of the prophet Muhammed, an act specifically forbidden under Islam, akin to putting up a statue of Yahweh in a tabernacle. Bin Laden's been portrayed in many cartoons since 9/11.

By Concept i mean introducing an aspect of real life into a fictional landscape, and sure sometimes this is a comman part of some literature. But a current real life 'villan' into a superhero comic. Okay if it was captain america then yeah he is corny enough to full it off. Batman isn't. Like Alaura said different worlds they tend to collapse when brought together, it just doesn't work, and i also agree with her on the watchmen call! |
