I just did an article on Octavia Butler for our intranet's daily column (I'm doing a once-a-week African American History feature for this month).

Quote from the Washington Post about her latest novel, Fledgling:

"How strange to find Octavia E. Butler digging up the old bones of [the vampire] legend. As the first African American woman to make a name for herself in science fiction and the winner of a MacArthur genius grant, she seems an unlikely victim of Dracula's allure. But, as we might expect, her new novel, Fledgling, doesn't just resurrect the pale trappings of vampire lore, it completely transforms them in a startlingly original story about race, family and free will."

I think Neil has also mentioned the young Black Canadian author Nalo Hopkinson in his blog.

You are a Confectioner. Who can take a sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Actually, that's Bob The Enchanter, two doors down on the left. But you make delectable treats, which is no simple feat considering Oompa Loompas won't be invented for three centuries. Not only do you delight with your sweets, but you've paved the way for a new profession: dentistry!

Terry McMillan.

I read A day late and a dollar short a few weeks ago. Made me laugh, made me cry, which is pretty close to my definition of a good book.

Seriously though, this is a great topic and some great suggestions. I recognized a few of the names, but not sure I've ever read any of them. I must rectify this someday.

I've got a soft spot in my heart for Richard Wright, especially Black Boy.

Well, I'll second Toni Morrison.

Also, Chinua Achebe.

"Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics don't learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say no. But saying 'yes' begins things. Saying 'yes' is how things grow. Saying 'yes' leads to knowledge."

Even though the movie is a sentimental chick-flicky-sob-fest (AND I LOVE IT), The Color Purple by Alice Walker is an incredible read.

“Chives?”
“Yes, m’lud?”
“Is that Ms Ephemera hovering over the croquet lawn?”
“Indeed m’lud. She’s marshalled all the haggle-dans. Missy-twigs and vale-nymphs from Claypole Woods. Apparently she intends to tear this house down and dance on the ruins.”
“Well, Chives, you’d better start the car, what? And pack my tennis things too”

I'm bout halfway through Miles Davis' autobiography the now, it's a pretty cool read, especially if you're into jazz at all.. it's made me appreciate the stuff I know a hell of a lot more, as you feel his enthusiasm and love for music leaking out of the pages. Smile
Or Maya Angelou- I know why the caged bird sings? Another autobiography, kinda classic. She's beautiful.
They're neither of them contemporary though, I'm useless at that.

What about Samuel R Delaney? He's black AND gay, and, although I've not read his stuff, my sister is a big fan and she has far better tasste in SF than I do.

Oh, and Charlie Mingus' autobiography 'Beneath the Underdog' is ace, even for non jazz fans.
