I'm taking a class where I have to do a unit on stereotypes of librarians in fiction.

The list of possible sources doesn't have any graphic novels, and when asked, the professor said they'd be fine. Do any of you have ideas of different graphic novels with librarian characters I could give her?

Obviously, I could use Lucien from the Sandman, or Batgirl (is there a graphic novel that actually shows her working in a library?) but do you have any other ideas?

i know the recent-ish batgirl year one origin graphic novel has her as a librarian.
it'd be interesting to compare that with other instances of barbra gordon/batgirl's origin. i remember reading an old pocket paperback book version of batman, and there barbara was the prudish marion the librarin hair pulled back in a tight bun type, while in the year one version, she's more of an intelligent computer hacking modern boss type.

I have nothing to offer except my support for your noble quest and the obvious foolishness that is my reading the thread title as 'Graphic Novels Featuring Libras'.

"The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" by Michael Chabon features a graphic novel about a librarian who is transformed into Luna Moth...and Michael Chabon actually published a collection of comics based on the book.

Very meta.

“Chives?”
“Yes, m’lud?”
“Is that Ms Ephemera hovering over the croquet lawn?”
“Indeed m’lud. She’s marshalled all the haggle-dans. Missy-twigs and vale-nymphs from Claypole Woods. Apparently she intends to tear this house down and dance on the ruins.”
“Well, Chives, you’d better start the car, what? And pack my tennis things too”

Fullmetal Alchemist had a librarian in it, early on...pretty stereotypical portrayal, iirc.

Not a graphic novel, but I'd like to mention Stephen King's The Library Policeman. As King tells it, what was supposed to be a light funny story takes a screaming left turn into the dark places that he's explored so much and yet still knows so little about. Pretty good story, but the lisp just kills the mood though.

So. The Librarian is occasionally illustrated, I guess The Last Hero qualifies as a graphic novel. Ook.

And there have been Buffy (Giles) comics, but I'd guess that wouldn't count

Strangely enough, I saw the name of this thread and was going to mention it, even though there wasn't much use for the OP.
Anyways, I was gonna say that for the-creepy-librarian-who-is-silently-watching-you stereotype (one that seems to come up more in real life than fiction) that's an interesting one.
However, I thought that after the end of supporting character Dave Duncan's story (my favorite part), it went downhill. Dave's experience added to Sam's, but the showdown left me wanting more.

Questionable Content has Marten working in a library with his polyamorous coworker Smile
But do webcomics count?

There are discworld graphic novels featuring the Librarian.

Edit: Gah, didn't notice Zone had already pointed it out.

And there are characters in Ellis' Doktor Sleepless who work in a bookstore, if that counts.

I'm so tempted to mention the Crypt Keeper. He had to have at least ONE cameo as a librarian. But I think he is more in the department of Archivist. Wink

There doesn't seem to be a definitive, canonical Conan the Librarian, searching turns up a lot of outdated links from the 80s. But the Wikipedia page says "See also: Cohen the Barbarian," which makes me happy.

Mr. Revise from Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges' Jack of Fables.

A very scary man.

ETA: But his senior librarians, the three Page sisters -- they are hot. Big Grin

The Guardian currently is running as a serial a graphic novel by Audrey Niffenegger (who wrote The Time Traveller's Wife) called The Night Bookmobile.

(The 'next' button for subsequent sections is at the top right of the picture. Each picture is small, but can be enlarged by clicking on the bottom right inside the picture.)
