I'm also a fan of Jamie Hewlett:
**** “Chives?†“Yes, m’lud?†“Is that Ms Ephemera hovering over the croquet lawn?†“Indeed m’lud. She’s marshalled all the haggle-dans. Missy-twigs and vale-nymphs from Claypole Woods. Apparently she intends to tear this house down and dance on the ruins.†“Well, Chives, you’d better start the car, what? And pack my tennis things too†--- Joe 3Heads |

Danish comic book artists part 2: Jakob Martin Strid - does the gorgeously designed "Strid" daily newspaper strip, which is also very funny. He's a great artist, and he's got a wonderful anarchistic punk sensibility. Lovely coloring too. All work done by him, in 24 hours, often commenting on yesterdays news.
Strip published on the day of the Danish election: Orc complaining that him appearing in yesterdays strip along with Hitler, Bin Laden and Danish right Wing politicians is going to make him look bad: Strid discovering todays strip under the sea: Strid trying to figure out the secret of tri-colored tooth paste: "Billy Beergut" the resident drunkard and sexist of the strip. "Little Star" is wondering what kinds of thoughts, hopes and dreams is going through the heads of people walking around in the streets below: Strid's computer coloring system fucking up. His real life editor (the guy with the beard) actually started getting fan mail after he continued to appear in the strip: This message has been edited. ...and I'm bored... so.... MOEBIUS... complete genius. Along with Crumb, probably the greatest visual talent working in comics.

And there's only one week left of the Miyazaki/Moebius exhibition in Paris :-(
http://www.miyazaki-moebius.com/ "Two major artists unveil their collection of personal drawings to the world for the first time. Moebius and Miyazaki well soon come together to exhibit more than 300 works. Traditionally, artists have trained themselves by travelling; the free exchange of ideas has always been an important creative resource. Moebius is French, Hayao Miyazaki is Japanese. These two world-builders each have their own field of expression, and their highly individual visions have influenced animation and comic book artists the world over. The path they have beaten for future generations is clear. Two cultures, two styles, one soul. Although separated by thousands of kilometers and radically different cultures, the artists mutually discovered each other’s works before even meeting. Their two bodies of work, although quite different in reality, have each evolved from a common spirit. Both Moebius and Miyazaki push the boundaries of story, character, art, and the technical aspects of animation. An exhibit that can be read at many levels and that will enchant young and old alike." John Totleben is a genius. It's a damn shame his eyes are going/gone. His detail is amazing.
I also loved Jeff Smith's Bone (simple, but wonderful), Zulli's Wake work (pencil painting that wowed me), Alex Ross' Kingdom Come and Marvels (The first premium comic I didn't mind spending $5+ on). I also have a soft spot for David Lapham's work on Harbinger and Barry Windsor Smith's work on Solar and XO. David Ross and Yvel Guichet's work on Valiant also caught my eye. I had the same problem with Hempel's work on Kindly Ones the first time I read it. When I read a few years later along with the Sandman Companion I grew to appreciate it alot more. There are details you don't catch referencing pages from old issues. The story also flows better when you read the whole thing together. I read it month to month the first time. I'm Matt Cable and I approve this message. ________________________________________________ I'm alright. Don't nobody worry bout me. |
