I just read my first Lemony Snicket book, and I love it! Why have I missed out for so long!

"Are you a princess? I said & she said I'm much more than a princess, but you don't have a name for it yet here on earth."

-Brian Andreas

Limertilly: A pagan deity forgotten by man and therefore banished to the realms of memory and darkness now remembered by a young girl in downtown L.A. in the form of a dream and therefore freed to reap your revenge on the people who discarded you, thereby forcing said girl to learn to use her innate yet awesome powers as a soothsayer to gather forces of the Earth to defy you and once more banish you to your cold, cold prisoooooon

in this week's Entertainment Weekly they state that they've switched directors (to City of Angels' Bra Silberling) and that the moveie will be based on the first three books of the series. Filimg will wrap up in May and they're planning for a December release.

Ok, theory in our house is that Beatrice, who all the books are dedicated to, is the Baudelaires' mother.

Anyone else think thats consistent with the story arc? We don't have all the books yet.

You are a Leprechaun. I'm not even sure what you are. Whiskey-soaked reports from your baffling Isle of Ire raise more questions than they answer. Are you a dwarf? Where's your pickax? If you're an elf, why don't you cobble? You'd think with all your gold, you could invest in some land, perhaps a title, and improve your station. Instead, you hide it in meteorologically-determined locations. You're getting killed on inflation, little friend!

the more I think about it though, the more I understand the choice for Jim Carrey. Olaf is a goofball especially when he's in disguise. I'm giving it a chance...
How much longer til the next book comes out??

Oh, I absolutely think that Carey CAN do a perfect Count Olaf (he's ridiculous and silly enough) -but I fear he will overdo it, like most of the stuff I've seen him in.
I didn't like the kids, though. I was used to the ones in the pictures.

The 75 Delirians?
Umm well, number 2 is off sick, 38 is suffering from a mild case of sanity, and 74 has

run off to the world of men to spread sparkly gigglepops to their drab civilization.
Is she nuts?
Oh yes, she scored very highly on the entrance exam!

If she was okay with Coraline I think she'd be fine with these.
Maybe read with her on the first one or two to get a feel for how she does.
The bad stuff that happens is soooo exaggerated that it's caricature-like, but kids "get" that at different ages.

Absolutely! But be prepared to stick with it for a few books. I didn't really come to love them until the 5th book, but after that I was totally hooked.

The eleventh book, The Grim Grotto, is due out 9/21. And it's a dollar more than the others, for what it's worth.

Bah! I went to the library and they only have book #4 (I can't find the logics of only having number 4, so don't ask me) and only the first 4 were translated anyway. anyone knows where I can get them (obviously online) for hmm.. cheap?

Bump! (I was going to start a Lemony Snicket thread but I thought I'd search first, and here we go.)

So yeah, a couple friends got me into them last year and now I'm so addicted. One of my friends bought Grimo Grotto, read it all in one day, and then I got to read it... my roommate wanted to kill me because every few chapters so I'd gasp uncontrollably and she, of course, hadn't read it yet and was bitter.

Marymac, I just read your theory, gasped aloud, and told it to my roommate, who stared at me open-mouthed for a few seconds.

Brilliant!

I'm actually looking forward to the movie. I like Jim Carrey. (There, I said it.) And even if it's bad, I can just go re-read the books.

A couple of my friends and I want to start a student group- Voracious Fans of Daniel Handler, or.. VFD. (Er, technically VFDH, but we'll ignore that.)

This is a kind of long post, sorry. I'm procrastinating and decided to ramble about Lemony Snicket Smile

Has anyone read Daniel Handler's "adult" fiction? I haven't yet, but a friend really liked them.

The world is quiet here.

OK, I somehow read pages 1 and 3 of this thread before replyinng, and now there's all this stuff on page 2 I want to talk about. My personal favorite, I think, is actually the Unauthorized Autobiography of Lemony Snicket. It's SO clever and it does give some details that I had really really wanted to know!

I think my favorite book that's technically in the series is Carnivorous Carnival.

Also, I LOVE the audio books, though I've only listened to a few of them. I couldn't think of anyone more perfect than Tim Curry for these books.

question: I just saw at Borders a Series of unfortunate events board game. It's $25. Does anyone know if it's worth getting?

Over a year late, but I'll throw in my 2 cents- my roommate has it, it's fun to play with other people who have read the books, and the cards are all really funny. It's a... kind of Clue-ish game? One person is Count Olaf, and the other 1-3 players are the kids (1 person could play all 3 Baudelaires if you only have 2 players) and every time Count Olaf moves, Mr. Poe takes one step toward the bank and... well, basically, the kids have to move around and avoid Count Olaf, and Count Olaf tries to trap them in rooms. (It's less complicated than it sounds.)

It's pretty fun, but nothing really extraordinary.

I have number 1 in hardback, and 5, 6, 7, and 8 in paperback. I'd give them to you free Mikka, but...that's five books! Wink Maybe we could trade something.
